What Is Transitional Kindergarten
Transitional Kindergarten exists for those students who are ready for the challenges of elementary school, while being on the younger end of the age requirements for a traditional one-year Kindergarten program. Students who will turn five years of age during August-November are candidates for Transitional Kindergarten, a two-year Kindergarten program. This extra year provides these students the opportunity to develop with their peers and to begin to explore the academic program of school.
OAE invites families to consider Transitional Kindergarten for their students with fall birthdays!
What Age Does Transitional Kindergarten Start?
At OAE, Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an option for young Kindergarten students. It is specifically designed for those students that turn five between September 1 and December 2. OAE does not serve children younger than age four, provided they will turn 5 by December 2 of the current school year. Those with fall birthdays are required to attend Kindergarten after completing TK.
TK is also an option for those with summer birthdays or children who would benefit from an extra year in the developmentally-appropriate Kindergarten classroom before beginning a more academically-rigorous program in first grade. Decisions whether a student is enrolled in TK or Kindergarten are made with the parents, teacher, and principal.
At OAE, one classroom is home to both TK and Kindergarten, which is capped at just 18 students. TK students do modified academic work while building social and fine motor skills. TK students participate in all school activities, including recess, field trips, chapels, and Big Buddies every Friday.
